Why Energy Efficiency Matters Especially at Scale
In leather goods manufacturing, productivity is often measured through output, precision, process stability and operator efficiency. However, one factor is frequently underestimated: energy consumption.
At the level of a single machine, the difference between one technical solution and another may seem relatively small. But when production is scaled across dozens of workstations, the impact becomes much more significant. This is especially relevant for large leather goods factories that operate multiple edge-painting and edge-cleaning stations every day.
At PL Project, this was one of the reasons behind the development of our Blue Planet Line – BPL series: compact machines designed for extremely low energy consumption, operational flexibility and practical use in real production environments.
BPL1310 Single Edge Painting Machine
Our BPL1310 Single Edge Painting Machine has a power consumption of only 3.5 W.
For comparison, conventional edge painting machines on the market can vary significantly in power consumption: from around 0.1 kW to 0.6 kW or more, depending on the model and configuration.
This means that even when compared with a relatively low-consumption 0.1 kW/100 W machine, the BPL1310 still has significantly lower energy demand.
Against a 100 W machine, the BPL1310 consumes approximately 28 times less energy. Against a 600 W machine, the difference becomes even more significant: approximately 171 times lower nominal power consumption.
BPL1330 Edge Cleaning Machine
Our BPL1330 Edge Cleaning Machine consumes only 15 W.
By comparison, many conventional edge cleaning machines are around 0.11 kW / 110 W. This means the BPL1330 consumes approximately 7 times less energy than a 110 W edge cleaning machine. These numbers may look like technical details when viewed on a machine-by-machine basis.
But they become much more important when multiplied across a full production floor.
Let us take a practical example.
A factory operates:
- 50 edge painting machines
- 50 edge cleaning machines
- 8 working hours per day
- 250 working days per year
To keep the comparison conservative, let us use 0.1 kW / 100 W as the reference point for conventional edge painting machines and 0.11 kW / 110 W for conventional edge cleaning machines. In this scenario, the conventional setup would require:
- 50 edge painting machines × 0.1 kW = 5 kW
- 50 edge cleaning machines × 0.11 kW = 5.5 kW
Total installed power: 10.5 kW
A comparable setup with PL Project BPL machines would require:
- 50 BPL1310 machines × 3.5 W = 0.175 kW
- 50 BPL1330 machines × 15 W = 0.75 kW
Total installed power: 0.925 kW
The difference is approximately: 10.5 kW – 0.925 kW = 9.575 kW
Over an 8-hour working day, this represents approximately: 76.6 kWh saved per day
Over 250 working days, the annual energy saving can reach approximately 19,150 kWh per year
Using the EU average electricity price for non-household consumers in the second half of 2025 – approximately €0.1837/kWh according to Eurostat – this would represent approximately:
€3,500 in annual electricity savings for a single-shift operation.
Of course, the exact result depends on the country, electricity contract, working hours, production organization and the real operating profile of the machines. In cases where conventional edge-painting machines consume 0.6 kW or more, the potential annual savings are significantly higher.
But even under a conservative comparison, the conclusion is clear: energy efficiency becomes a strategic factor when multiplied across a full production floor.
There is also another important advantage.
The machines in our Blue Planet Line can operate on a power bank thanks to their extremely low energy requirements. This gives factories additional flexibility. Machines can be used during the working day with a portable power supply, while batteries can be charged later, depending on the local tariff structure and production organization.
This is not only about reducing electricity bills. It also supports:
- more flexible production layouts;
- reduced dependence on fixed electrical installations;
- easier workstation reorganization;
- lower energy demand at peak hours;
- more adaptable small-batch or seasonal production;
- a more sustainable production environment.
For brands and manufacturers increasingly focused on ESG, energy efficiency and responsible production, machine consumption is no longer a secondary technical detail. It is part of the factory’s real production cost and environmental footprint.
At PL Project, we believe the future of leather goods machinery is about more than automation and precision. It is also about designing smarter, lighter and more efficient production tools.
The Blue Planet Line was created with this philosophy in mind: low consumption, high practicality and real industrial value.
Because in modern manufacturing, efficiency is not only about how much a machine can do. It is also about how little energy it needs to do it.
